University of Ottawa football player, 25, dies 'shortly after' season opener

Perron joined the Gee-Gees football program in 2017 after playing football at Cégep de Sherbrooke in Quebec

Francis Perron, a defensive lineman at the University of Ottawa, died "shortly after" the institution's period opener versus the University of Toronto over the weekend, authorities said. He was 25.

President and Vice-Chancellor Jacques Frémont released a statement on Sunday validating Perron's passing a day earlier in Toronto. He did not reveal the conditions surrounding his death.

"It is with a really aching heart that I bring you some extremely unfortunate information. Over the weekend, Francis Perron, one of our Mechanical Design students as well as a protective lineman in his fifth season with Gee-Gees football, passed away soon after a game between uOttawa as well as the College of Toronto," Frémont's statement read.

"An intense, enthusiastic, and also caring individual, Francis poured himself into his craft as a gamer as well as his scholastic search of coming to be a designer."

Head instructor Marcel Bellefeuille issued his own statement on Twitter, calling Perron "an exceptional individual, colleague, gamer and also proficient leader."

"He was somebody that liked and also was liked, by everyone that is a part of our program. He will certainly be missed out on!"

Perron signed up with the Gee-Gees football program in 2017 after playing football at Cégep de Sherbrooke in Quebec for 2 years. While at uOttawa, he was a multiple-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian.
